Scia Engineer and Ectools were present at the 2015 anual SEAOC Convention in Seattle.
Structural Engineers had deep discussions with regards to the following issues:
A new version of ECtools has been released with the addtion of US code ACI318-11 & ASCE/SEI 7-10.
The software upgrade for ACI318-11 & ASCE/SEI 7-10 is only available to users of Scia Engineer, while the Eurocodes functionality is also available to Etabs 9.x users.
The software may be downloaded from the download tab of our site, or from Nemetscheck Scia.
Nemetschek SCIA and ECtools sponsored 2nd ECEES in Istanbul
ECtools and Nemetschek Scia sponsored the 2nd European Conference on Earthquake Engineering & Seismology 24-29 October 2014 in Istanbul.
Several presentations of the new software developements were attended by academic users and practicing engineers.
Nemetschek Scia and Penelis Consulting Engineers SA developed a detailed and comprehensive verificatio manual for Scia Engineer and ECtools applying the ACI 318-11 concrete code. The verification has been based on comparison to Etabs2013 (c) a world renowed structural analysis software.
The report may be downloaded from the download tab of our site,
or from the Nemetscheck Scia site:
In case of furter investigation, the source files are available here.
The new text Book Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions has been published by Taylor and Francis (CRC) world wide. The book is auhrored bt Em. Professor George Penelis and Dr. Gregory Penelis.
Bearing in mind that reinforced concrete is a key component in a majority of built environment structures, Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions combines the scientific knowledge of earthquake engineering with a focus on the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic regions. This book addresses practical design issues, providing an integrated, comprehensible, and clear presentation that is suitable for design practice.
It combines current approaches to seismic analysis and design, with a particular focus on reinforced concrete structures, and includes:
Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions determines guidelines for the proper structural system for many types of buildings, explores recent developments, and covers the last two decades of analysis, design, and earthquake engineering. Divided into three parts, the book specifically addresses seismic demand issues and the basic issues of structural dynamics, considers the "capacity" of structural systems to withstand seismic effects in terms of strength and deformation, and highlights existing R/C buildings under seismic action. All of the book material has been adjusted to fit a modern seismic code and offers in-depth knowledge of the background upon which the code rules are based. It complies with the last edition of European Codes of Practice for R/C buildings in seismic regions, and includes references to the American Standards in effect for seismic design.
Nemetschek Scia, 3π presented ECtools and Scia Engineer 2011 in Eurodyn2011, in Leuven Belgium
Nemetschek SCIA and 3π presented the launching of ECtools and Scia Engineer 2011 during the EURODYN2011, Eighth International Conference on Structural Dynamics which took place in Leuven,
Belgium, from 4 to 6 July 2011. The international academia and practicing engineers who participated took an interest in the Seismic Design capabilities of the new co-operation between Nemetschek Scia and 3π-Penelis Software ltd.

Nemetschek Scia, 3π and Techsciense presented ECtools and Scia Engineer 2011 in Greece
Nemetschek SCIA, 3π and Techscience presented to two large audiences of civil engineers the launching of ECtools and Scia Engineer 2011 on the 14th June 2011 in Athens and the 15th of June 2011 in Thessaloniki at 18.00.
The Athens event took place at the Golden Age Hotel and was oppenned by the em. professor of NTUA Dr. P. Karydis and the president of the Greek Association of Civil Engineers Mr. N. Zygouris.
The Thessaloniki event will took place at the Concert Hall and was oppenned by the professor of AUTH and secretary of EAEE Dr. A. Kappos and the president of Association of Civil Engineers of Thessaloniki Mr. E. Pertzinidis.
First Part, General Presentation (Athens event) |
Second Part, Detailed Examples (Thessaloniki event) |
The all new ECtools has been formally been released. This new version of the software has incorporated all the features of ECtools but with the following additions:
- Full co-operation with the upcoming new SCIA Engineer 2011
- Use of all available National Annexes
- Use of several EU languages for the technichal report
- Fire design according to EN1992
Comparison of Eurocodes versions
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
ECtools© (Earthquake Concrete tools) is a design software for Reinforced Concrete and Unreinforced Masonry Structures using either the European Norms (Eurocodes) or the ACI318-11& ASCE/SEI7-10 US norms. It aims to facilitate the practicing structural engineer or the design office in the correct application of the several clauses of these codes. It utilises the analysis results of either Scia Engineer© or - for the Eurocodes- ETABS©, and can be used in the following cases:
Gravity loads design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings
Wind Load design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings
Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings
Pushover analysis of Reinforced Concrete & Composite Buildings
The complete set of video tutorials for Scia Engineer and ETABS may be found at our youtube channel or here.

GENERAL ADVANTAGES
ECtools has been developed by 3PI. Ltd. which is a subsidiary of Penelis Consulting Engineers SA , a structural design office with projects in many EU and Non-EU countries with high seismic risk, such as Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Cyprus, Egypt.
This means that ECtools is a product developed by structural engineers, aiming to satisfy the needs of structural engineers when dealing with large projects. It has been extensively tested within the design office and many Universities and its predecessor, eTools, has been in use since 2002 in Greece and Cyprus.
COUNTRIES OF APPLICATION
The Eurocodes program has allowed for some diversification within member states, thus introducing the National Annexes for each Eurocode. ECtools has incorporated those NAs for all EU countries.
Non EU countries, or EU countries without available NAs, can apply either the general suggestions of the Eurocodes, or a NA of their choice.
Additionally the clauses of ACI318-11 and ASCE/SEI 7-10 are applicable, through the IBC, to all US states as well as many international projects world wide.
LANGUAGE
The software menu and manual are in English, however the final calculation report, which is part of the design deliverables, can be produced in any language the user wishes, since it is very common for local authorities not to accept calculation reports in foreign languages.
